Is Your Business Safe from Phishing Attacks?

Phishing emails are emails that cyber-criminals will send in order to trick you into revealing sensitive information or clicking links that download viruses and help them bypass your security. They look incredibly convincing and so many people get caught out by them. If you’re running a business, they’re a big danger because you have a lot of employees that are all getting a lot of emails every day.

It’s so easy for somebody to miss a malicious email and click the wrong link, and then you have a big problem on your hands. But don’t worry, there are things that you can do to keep your business safe. These are the best ways to protect your business from phishing emails.

Invest in the Right Security Services

The most important thing that you can do to protect yourself is to invest in the right security services. Find a network security service that will protect your sensitive data from outside attacks, and most importantly, manage emails so phishing emails are automatically flagged and sent to the spam folder. If the emails never reach your employees in the first place, they can’t cause you a problem. There will always be some that get through because online criminals are always changing their tactics, but the right security services will be able to protect you from the majority of them.

Learn to Spot the Red Flags

When it comes to protecting yourself online, a lot of it has to do with basic common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is, and if there is anything that seems suspicious, it’s likely to be a scam. The same can be said of phishing emails, you just need to learn to spot the red flags. If an email that is supposedly from an official source has a lot of spelling mistakes, it is probably a phishing email. If they are using scare tactics and urging you to click a link right away, that’s a giveaway as well. Give your employees some training and help them learn to spot the signs of a malicious email so they know when they should proceed with caution.

Check the Sender

If something doesn’t seem right, the best thing to do is check the sender. Often, if you do a search for the email address of the sender, it will flag up as a scam and you know to just delete the email. However, even if the email address is genuine, that doesn’t mean the email itself is. A technique called email spoofing can be used to make the email appear as if it is coming from a legitimate source, so you can’t always trust it.

Choose the Right Email Provider

The email provider that you use makes a big difference because some of them are much better at catching these emails than others. You should pick an email service that has a strong focus on security because these will have a more advanced phishing filter that should be able to remove the majority of malicious emails before they reach your inbox.

It’s important that you protect your business from phishing emails because if you don’t, you open yourself up to cyber-attacks which could cripple the business entirely.
