Top Tips for Putting Yourself First

Putting yourself first can be easier said than done. It isn’t about being selfish and neglecting others in your life. It is about making the right choices to help you be able to do what you need to do. After all, you can’t keep putting everyone and everything else first if you have nothing left to give yourself.

When was the last time you put yourself and your wellbeing before other people or commitments? You would be surprised at how neglecting your own health – mental and physical – can make you do things you didn’t think you would!

Getting Yourself Back on an Even Keel

You probably wouldn’t be surprised to know that most Americans are dependant on things such as sugar or caffeine to give them a boost throughout the day and keep themselves going. That afternoon slump you feel later in the day? Around 4 pm? That is the result of the sugar rush or caffeine fix leaving your body.

Listening to what your body needs can help you move away from or just cut down your consumption of stimulants in food and drinks. Adapting your diet to include more fruits and vegetables can help you regulate your body by making sure you are getting all the nutrients you need to sustain your lifestyle. Making sure you get enough vitamins and minerals is essential to help your body function normally.

The thing is, bad habits can be hard to break, and some people find it helps to visit an inpatient drug detox center to help them overcome certain addictions.

Get Moving

“Exercise isn’t for me!”

How many times have you said or heard others say that? Exercise doesn’t always mean hitting the gym. Whilst this approach works well for some, others may find it isn’t for them. But your body needs exercise in some form.

Don’t forget, working out can have a huge impact on your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health. The endorphins released from exercise can give you a boost and help out during times of low mood. The benefits are well documented, and even just 15 mins of exercise per day can be beneficial.

So, get out and about, go for a walk, jog or run in your local park. Or, how about taking advantage of the many free workouts you can find on YouTube. It is like having a private exercise class at home and no need for expensive gym memberships.

Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

If you can try to add some workouts such as yoga or pilates to your day. These types of workouts are mainly stretching based and can be beneficial to helping you wind down and get relaxed for bed. The benefits of getting a good night’s sleep are huge and sleep deprivation can make everything seem and feel worse.

Develop a bedtime routine that works for you by making some small changes of an evening. Things such as setting your alarm for the same time every day and going to bed at the same time can help you find a sustainable routine.

Taking a bath before bed and removing electronics from the bedroom also help too. Giving your body and mind time to wind down before you go to sleep has been proven to induce a better, deeper sleep as the blue screens from electronic devices can interfere with how well you sleep.
