Summer is the perfect time of year to embrace the outdoors and gain a new perspective. There are many well-being benefits of spending time in nature and even if you don’t have time to go far, you’ll return feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. There are also plenty of activities you can try out with the whole family on any budget.

You could consider practising mindfulness outdoors or exploring hidden gems near you. It’s also a good time to get some physical exercise. Here are five relaxing ways you can spend a summer’s day.

Forest Bathing

The Japanese art of forest bathing is a mindfulness activity that can be very beneficial for kids and adults alike. Simply take a walk in an area of natural beauty and concentrate on the sights, sounds, and smells. If you go with kids you could encourage them to engage with nature by identifying local flora and fauna. With all the COVID-19 Variant Research going on at the moment, it’s a safer way to enjoy a day out away from the crowds.

Try New Sports

You could consider taking up a new sport. Shake up your workout routine by getting outdoors and trying different activities. You could go swimming, take an outdoor fitness class, or even have a go at something more adventurous such as climbing or watersports. Physical activity will help you improve your mood and de-stress. If you’d rather avoid the gyms this year, summer is the perfect time for some outdoor sports.

Cycle Trails

Explore local hidden gems by getting back on your bike this summer. You could even rent a bike and go out for the day. Cycle around your hometown and try and see it in the eyes of a tourist. If you’d like to venture further you can easily find cycle trails online. Pack a picnic and make a day of it. You’ll return feeling fresh, energized and ready to take on life’s challenges.

Practice Mindfulness

If you haven’t got time for a long day out you could set up a space in your yard to meditate. There are several benefits of meditating outdoors. You’ll have fewer distractions and will be able to engage with nature. You could create a sensory space for meditation. Include plenty of soft textures such as mats or pillows and surround yourself with fragrant flowers. These will help to enhance your concentration and you’ll be able to clear your mind of cluttering thoughts.

Creative Activities

Creative activities can also help you to de-stress. They make a great distraction because they require a deep level of engagement and focus. You could try creating upcycling ideas for the garden. Repurpose a few random household items into planters, for example. This is a great way to keep the kids entertained as well and could be a fun project for all the family. You don’t need to travel far or spend much money to enjoy a relaxing time this summer. Find a simple way to de-stress that works for you.
