Surprising Health Impacts of Working in the City

It should be no surprise that most people looking to get into entrepreneurship want to move into the city. It’s the best way to be as close as you can to as much of your potential target market as possible. However, if you have moved to work in the city, you might already be realizing that it can be demanding in some new and strange ways.

Those demands can have a real impact on your health, as well. As such, here are a few things you should keep an eye on.

The Desk Dangers

Most people who work in the city are going to be working in an average office space, sitting at a desk, with a keyboard and a screen in front of them. This might not sound that intimidating, but the truth is that there are plenty of dangers to working a desk job. The riskiest, however, are the musculoskeletal injuries that can come from poor posture and failing to get up and move often enough. Ergonomic furniture, alongside active breaks from your desk, is essential.

City Stress Is Different

It might seem like nothing more than a stereotype, but it is genuinely true that living in the city can be a lot more stressful. Simply being around that many people, with things moving that fast, can be quite the culture shock to people who are newly moving into the area. As such, it’s important to be able to find your zen time, whether it’s finding a great local spa, or creating a space in your apartment where you can chill with a meditation app and a scented candle.

Listen up and Listen Out

One danger that goes way under the radar of people living in the city is just how much noise it produces. Walking by traffic, working in busy offices, meeting in loud restaurants and bars, all of this can genuinely do real damage to your hearing, leading to hearing loss over time. To make sure you prevent it and stay on top of any changes to your hearing health, it’s worth taking the time to find an audiologist. This is especially true if you notice any changes to your hearing, even small ones. You can’t get your hearing back, so it’s vital that you protect it.

Sleep and Fatigue

Not only can the busy life of the city affect your sleeping patterns, but the way that city life operates, especially in regards to how we tend to get less access to natural sunlight, can genuinely affect the circadian rhythm that rules over the way we sleep. In fact, even birds who live in the city have their circadian rhythm affected, as well! As such, it’s important to make sure you take whatever measures possible to improve your sleeping habits, such as using tools that help you get a full REM sleep before your alarm.

No matter where you work, you’re going to have to take care of your health. When it comes to the city, however, hopefully, the tips above can keep you on the right path.
