If you’re one of the many homeowners who enjoy drinking filtered water in the convenience of their home, chances are you will need to know how to change a water filter. There are simple steps to take to ensure your water purification system is running at its optimal level. That includes having the water filter changed on a regular schedule.

Read on for a homeowner’s guide on how to replace a water filter that will keep your daily water intake tasting its best.

Steps Before Changing the Filter

Before jumping into changing a water filter in your home water filter system, it’s important to know what kind of system you have.

Some are built into the refrigerator. Others are mounted onto the faucet over the sink. Still, other systems sit under the sink, and the filtered water comes out of a specially installed faucet.

Once you identify your water filtration system, order filter replacements, so they are available when it’s time to change the filter.

Know When to Change the Filter

Read the owner’s manual from your water filtration system to know when the water filter needs to be changed. Frequency varies between manufacturers and systems.

A general rule to follow is twice a year or every 4-6 months. Some water filtration models will have an indicator light letting you know when it’s time for a new filter.

How to Change a Water Filter

The steps you take to replace a water filter will depend on your water filter system.

Refrigerator Water Filter

Turn off the water that leads to the fridge. Remove the old filter by either twisting it or pressing a release button. Insert the new filter and push it into place.

Under-Sink Water Filter

Turn off the cold water valve to your sink. Open up the tap to depressurize the system.

Remove the old water filter from its bracket. Install the new filter by screwing it back into the bracket. Reconnect the water hoses and repressurize the system. Be sure to check the owner’s manual to follow all the instructions.

Some drinking water systems feature a quick-change release system that makes replacing filters easy with a short twist.

Faucet-Mounted Filter System

A faucet-mounted water filtration system features a filter cartridge that purifies the tap water. The cartridge sits atop the mounting system.

To change the filter, twist and remove the old cartridge. Insert the new filter into the faucet mounting system.

It’s Time to Change That Water Filter

To keep household appliances in good working order, it’s important to remember to replace the filters.

But don’t forget about the filters for your water filtration system. Learning how to change a water filter, whether you have an under-the-sink system or one in the refrigerator, is essential in keeping the contaminants out of your drinking water.
