Name Brand vs. Generic Clothing: Should You Pay More?

Clothes made by famous brands are expensive. Everyone knows this and many wonder what the difference between those brands and generic no-name clothing from regular stores really is. Most importantly, people wonder whether it’s really worth it to pay double, or even triple the price for a label.

The answer to this question is very complicated. And in the end, it’s only you who can decide if that price is worth paying. It all boils down to how much you value the benefits offered by wearing trendy brand items.

The Matter of Price

The biggest issue for many people is that branded clothing is expensive. We spend quite a lot on clothes as it is. According to surveys, an average American household spends almost $2,000 a year on clothing and apparel. We spend more on shoes. Watches, and trendy accessories than we do on education. And yet, we discard about 70 pounds of clothes every year.

This means that we literally throw away a lot of money. Now, do you think you should buy that $50 branded T-shirt if you are only going to throw it away in a year?

If you think of it that way, the brand doesn’t seem like it’s worth the money. However, you shouldn’t forget that top name clothes aren’t always expensive. You can be on the lookout for the best Black Friday deals and get the branded clothes of your dream much cheaper. This is definitely an opportunity you shouldn’t miss. That’s also why you should follow brands you like to get alerts for sales. Again, you’ll be able to get those items at a price close to generic clothing.

If you look at it this way, there definitely isn’t a disadvantage to buying top brands.

Therefore, the matter of price is an issue that can be resolved if you have enough patience to wait for a sale.

The Matter of Quality

It’s generally believed that name branded clothing is of a higher quality compared to generic store brands. Usually, it’s true, but today the discrepancy isn’t that big. You can both buy generic clothing that’s quite good and branded that is mediocre.

You also need to be on the lookout for fakes, which are quite numerous.

Therefore, in regards to quality, you should look at the quality of each item specifically. Don’t just expect that your name- branded shirt will be perfect because of its label.

The Matter of Status

The main thing about branded clothing is that it gives you a boost in social status. There is no denying this fact because top name brands always draw attention. And many people wear them for this exact reason. They often get a boost of confidence from wearing these expensive clothes. They might also be pressured into it by their peers or social group.

It must also be noted that people who are more sensitive to how others perceive them will often choose to wear generic clothes on purpose.

So, in the end to buy name brand clothes or not mostly depends on whether you want to attract attention using them. If so, you can definitely find a way to buy these items on sale. If attention isn’t something you want, high-quality pieces from nameless brands will be just as good.
