What Is Solar Power and How Does It Work? A Quick Guide

Solar power is no longer a buzzword. It’s no longer seen as the alternative energy solution of idealists. As our understanding of this form of power grows, so does innovation in the field. From solar-powered hot air balloons to the tesla solar roof, it’s safe to say that solar power is here to stay!

That being the case, many are becoming more curious about how this form of energy works. So, if you’ve ever asked yourself “what is solar power?” Keep reading to find out the answer.

What Is Solar Power?

The sun is the greatest source of energy in the world. Every single day, our favorite star, the Sun, radiates over 3 trillion watts of power onto our planet, which is more energy than the entire population will ever need in a single year, let alone a day.

Solar technology harnesses that power through an array of solar photovoltaic panels. These consist of smaller silicon cells made of layers of glass, metal and doped N-type, and P-type materials.

The ingenious combination of these materials absorbs the light from the sun, which stimulates the electrons in the doped materials within the cells. This creates a DC voltage, which is then converted into AC using an inverter. And there you have it: usable and green energy!

What Makes It So Special?

Solar energy is not only good for the environment but your pocket too! Having an array of solar panels on your roof is like owning your very own power station. This means that much of the energy that your home needs can be harnessed practically from thin air, which will offset the cost of traditional energy.

If, at times you generate more energy than you need, your surplus can be exported back to the grid in exchange for credits. If at times you generate too little, you are still connected to the grid, so there is never a lack of power at any time in your home.

Depending on the state you live in, there are also incentives for installing solar power in your home or company.

There are three types of incentives: Tax credits, rebates, and performance-based. Doing a thorough investigation of the incentives and companies in your state may hold great rewards for your household or business.

Knowledge Is Power!

“What is solar power?” is more than a casual question. It’s a topic that involves the future of technology and the planet. Asking this question is proof that you care about the world we will leave behind. It has more to do with saving the environment than saving money.

So, the real question now is, “Is solar power for me?” Why not investigate further about the topic and make a well-informed decision? Our website, with a variety of subjects, may just help you with your research.
